Lucky was found in Cowes with a fishing hook, line and sinker through his beak
We received a call from Cowes Enterprise College about a gull in distress, with a fishing hook caught through its mouth. Thanks to the quick-thinking staff, who managed to gently catch the bird and keep it safe wrapped in a fleece, help was already on hand when we arrived.

We contacted Carisbrooke Vets straight away, and under sedation their team carefully removed the hook.
Later in the day, we were delighted to collect the gull — now nicknamed Lucky — safe and recovering. We’re so grateful to the vets for their expert care.
From there, Lucky was welcomed by the wonderful Claire at Skippers Sanctuary, who immediately offered a place for rehabilitation.
We’d like to remind everyone who uses fishing hooks to please dispose of them responsibly. A small action makes a big difference — and helps prevent injuries like this to our island’s precious wildlife.
